孔子弟子对孔子之道有不同的解读，曾参认为孔子之道是忠恕，有子认为孔子之道是仁，子贡认为孔子之道是“文章”、性与天道，可是，曾参、有子和子贡的观点未被孔子当面认可；冉求所言孔子之道虽被孔子当面认可，可惜，冉求却没有讲明何为孔子之道。这样，何为孔子之道遂成为学者们研究、争论的对象。
Confucius disciples have different interpretations of the Tao, Zeng-shen considers Tao of Confucius is Faithfulness and forgiveness, You-zi considers Tao of Confucius is Benevolence, Zi-gong considers Tao of Confucius is "Article", Nature and Providence, however opinions of Zeng-shen, You-zi and Zi-gong haven't been recognized by Confucius. Though opinion of Ran-qiu has been recognized by Confucius, it's pity he hasn't explained what is the Tao of Confucius. So, what is the Tao of Confucius becomes the object of scholars' research and controversy.
