Interpersonal Expansion Scale: A Single Item Measure of Self-Expansion
Abstract: The self-expansion model holds that people have the motivation of seeking to expand their self-potential, that is, the motivation of self-expansion. One of the important ways to fulfill this motivation is to include others into themselves, and experience their resources, viewpoints and identities as their own. The inclusion of other in the self and self-expansion can be measured by the Inclusion of Other in the Self Scale and the Self-Expansion Questionnaire respectively. Self-Expansion Questionnaire has the disadvantages of low efficiency and poor flexibility compared with the Inclusion of Other in the Self Scale. To address this shortcoming, we developed a single item graphical measure of self-expansion, the Interpersonal Expansion Scale. The results found that the Interpersonal Expansion Scale had good reliability and validity. The score of the Interpersonal Expansion Scale was also found to be positively correlated with relationship quality index, such as relationship satisfaction and commitment. No dyadic effects of self-expansion were found. These results may indict that while self-expansion is beneficial for actor’s relationship quality, it is not inherently a mutually beneficial process. The development of the Interpersonal Expansion Scale may have positive significance for the further study of self-expansion model in the future.
