Industry Differences, Corporate Social Responsibility and Technological Innovation Performance
摘要: 本文采用2009~2018年润灵环球责任评级数据(RSK)和国家知识产权局专利数据,基于信号理论,从行业差异视角研究了企业社会责任(CSR)对企业技术创新绩效的影响。研究发现:1) CSR表现对企业技术创新绩效具有促进作用,体现为创新专利数量和质量的提升。进一步考虑不同行业环境影响发现:2) 处于行业领先水平的焦点企业,其CSR对企业技术创新绩效促进作用更明显,表明其具有“领头羊”式的CSR信号作用;3) 行业竞争程度较高或处于高技术密集行业时,CSR表现对企业技术创新绩效的促进作用更明显。以上研究表明,CSR对企业技术创新绩效的影响效应具有异质性,而该异质性与企业所处行业差异具有强烈关系。
Abstract: From the perspective of industry difference, based on the signal theory, this paper investigates the impact of corporate social responsibility (CSR) on technological innovation performance of firms by using the 2009 - 2018 CSR ratings data obtained from the Rankins CSR Ratings (RKS) and the patent data from the State Intellectual Property Office. We find that: 1) Reflected in the quantity and quality of innovation patents, CSR practice has a promoting effect on technological innovation performance. Furthermore, considering the environmental impact of different industries, we find that: 2) For top-tier firms within an industry, the impact of CSR on technological innovation performance is more pronounced, indicating they play a “bellwether” CSR signaling role; 3) When the industry is highly competitive or in a high-tech intensive industry, the impact of CSR on technological innovation performance is more pronounced. The above analyses indicate that the impact of CSR on technological innovation performance is heterogeneous, and the heterogeneity is strongly related to the industry differences.
