Abstract: Purpose: To examine the relationship between social media dependence and suicidal ideation among college students in the context of information overload, and to investigate the mediating role of fear of missing out (FoMO), thereby providing empirical evidence for mental health education interventions targeting college students. Methods: A sample of 1030 college students was surveyed using the Social Media Dependence Questionnaire, the Fear of Missing Out Scale, and the Self-Rating Idea of Suicide Scale. The mediation model was established and tested using Model 4 of the PROCESS macro. Results: (1) Female college students exhibited significantly higher levels of social media dependence, fear of missing out, and suicidal ideation than male students; (2) Social media dependence among college students positively predicted both fear of missing out and suicidal ideation; (3) Fear of missing out fully mediated the relationship between social media dependence and suicidal ideation.
