Abstract: This paper delves into the multifaceted impact of social development on residential design, looking at different historical stages of evolution. First, urbanization has driven residential design towards vertical living and efficient use of space, reflecting the challenges posed by the limited availability of urban land. Second, social diversity has led to a focus on cultural expression and individuality, with designers incorporating local cultural elements to meet the needs of residents from different cultural backgrounds. Changes in family structure require more flexibility in design to adapt to the needs of different family forms. With the increase of environmental awareness, the rise of sustainable housing design has become the focus of designers’ attention, and environmental elements have gradually permeated the choice of materials and other aspects. Finally, the rise of digital technology makes residential life smarter and improves the living experience. Taken together, social development and change have triggered multi-level impacts in the field of residential design, including the use of space, cultural expression, family structure, sustainability, and the innovation of digital technology.
