Abstract: This paper first introduces the essence, theoretical origin and applicable situations of the endowment effect, taking the theories of loss aversion and query theory as typical representatives. Secondly, it explores the three main psychological mechanisms of the endowment effect from the perspective of psychology, involving different roles’ information processing mechanisms, self-association and self-enhancement. Thirdly, it introduces the main influencing factors of the endowment effect from three perspectives of individual level, item level, and experimental paradigm. Finally, after a comprehensive review of the endowment effect, it proposes future research directions.
