From Cheap Excess to a Return to Simplicity: Thoreau’s Simple Living Philosophy and Its Ecological Implications for Fast Fashion
Abstract: The fast fashion industry, with its rapid product updates and low-price strategies, has sparked a “cheap craze” on a global scale, but it has also caused serious ecological crises, social injustice, and individual consumption alienation. This article uses Thoreau’s “simple living philosophy” proposed in Walden as a theoretical resource. From the perspective of applied ethics, it systematically criticizes the development model of fast fashion and explores the sustainable development path of the fast fashion industry, aiming to provide profound insights for overcoming the predicament of fast fashion and achieving harmonious coexistence between humans and nature in a new fashion ethics. The paper first points out the serious costs caused by fast fashion in the environmental, social and psychological aspects, and indicates that its essence is an unsustainable economic development and consumption model; then, starting from the text, it explains Thoreau’s life philosophy centered on “simplicity”, “independence” and “nature”, emphasizing its criticism of “false needs” and its return to true value; finally, it constructs a realistic path from spiritual liberation to practical return for a sustainable fashion system.
