Critique and Construction: An Exploration of the Ecological Implications in André Gorz’s Thought on Labor Emancipation

Abstract: This paper aims to explore the ecological implications embedded in the labor emancipation theory of André Gorz, a French ecological Marxist thinker. It begins by situating Gorz’s theoretical background within the context of the “post-industrial society,” wherein the capitalist mode of production, dominated by “economic rationality,” has given rise to the dual predicaments of labor alienation and ecological crisis. The paper then systematically examines Gorz’s critique of capitalism, arguing that labor alienation originates from the internal drive of economic rationality and is concretely manifested in the alienation of the division of labor, science and technology, and consumption. On the basis of this critique, the paper further elucidates Gorz’s project of labor emancipation, constructed around the core principle of “ecological rationality,” which comprises three main pathways: promoting labor emancipation (through reducing working hours and implementing universal basic income), adopting decentralized “soft technologies,” and advocating the value of “enough is enough.” Finally, the paper offers a reflective assessment of Gorz’s thought, pointing out that its neglect of the role of productive forces and the challenges encountered in its practical pathways constitute unavoidable limitations of his theoretical framework.
