Progress in Applying the Common Fate Model to Dyadic Studies in Nursing
Abstract: Dyadic relationships are pervasive in nursing practice, where two parties are interdependent in disease coping and health management. This interdependence produces non‑independent data, challenging conventional statistical methods. The Common Fate Model (CFM), through latent variables, elevates the unit of analysis from the individual to the dyadic level, offering a methodological tool for examining shared influencing factors. This article systematically reviews the conceptual and statistical foundations of CFM, summarizes its current applications in family, psychological, and health‑related research, and discusses its progress and limitations within the nursing domain. At present, the application of CFM in nursing is still in its infancy, constrained by limited scenarios, a narrow range of relationship types, and a shortage of appropriate measurement instruments. Future efforts should focus on developing locally adapted instruments for shared constructs, incorporating longitudinal and mediation designs, and shifting the analytical emphasis from individual‑level effect estimation to shared‑construct modeling, particularly in typical caregiving contexts such as chronic illness dyadic management and nurse‑patient therapeutic alliances. These steps will provide methodological support for addressing the analytical demands arising from mutual interaction and co‑adaptation in nursing practice.
