Abstract: Rubidium and cesium, by virtue of their nearly identical ionic radii and closely overlapping chemical behavior, pose a long-standing challenge for efficient separation in separation chemistry. Among substituted benzylphenols, 4-tert-butyl-2-(α-methylbenzyl)phenol (t-BAMBP) and its related derivatives have become the central paradigm for Rb/Cs solvent extraction, operating through a phenolate-Cs⁺ supramolecular-aggregate recognition motif. Synergistic extraction in this system has, to date, been explored almost exclusively by pairing t-BAMBP with structurally dissimilar extractants (e.g., amines, organophosphorus acids). Here we advance a hitherto-unexamined hypothesis: that co-mixing t-BAMBP (A) with its bis-substituted derivative, 4-(tert-butyl)-2,6-bis(1-phenylethyl)phenol (B), may elicit a measurable synergistic effect within the same molecular family via structure-complementary self-assembly. We rationalize this possibility from the coupled perspectives of cation exchange and supramolecular self-assembly, and marshal as circumstantial support the solubility/phase-behavior screening of compounds C1~C9 together with a preliminary investigation into the interference of varying K⁺ concentrations on feed solutions containing 4 ppm Rb and 3 ppm Cs. This is a perspective article; the synergistic performances discussed are hypotheses grounded in the literature and physicochemical data, and await experimental validation.
