Numerical linear algebra, particularly the solution of linear systems of equations, linear least squares problems, eigen v alue problems and singular v alue problems, is fundamen tal to most calculations in scien ti c computing, and is often the most computationally in tensiv e part of suc h calculations. Designers of computer programs in v olving linear algebraic op erations ha v e frequen tly c hosen to implemen t certain lo w lev el op erations, suc h as the dot pro duct or the matrix-v ector pro duct, as separate subprograms. This ma y b e observ ed b oth in man y published co des and in co des written for sp eci c applications at man y computer installations.
