Abstract: Source memory is the memory for various kinds of contextual features. Studies in recent years have found that self-referencing could not only enhance memory for items, but also could facilitate memory for source information. This effect is not limited to young adults, but also can be found in children and older adults. In western countries, close others could not show the same source me- mory advantage as the self. Whether eastern would behave similar to western remains an open question. Researches using ERP and fMRI on neural mechanisms of the source memory advantage from self-referencing have made some progress. All these studies can help us better understand the mechanisms under the self-reference effect.
