Analysis of the “Deforming Tendencies” in the English Translation of Backflow River Based on Berman’s Theory of “Negative Analysis”

摘要: 本文基于贝尔曼的“否定分析”理论，分析了韩斌翻译的贾平凹作品《倒流河》的英译本中存在的“变形倾向”。研究发现，韩斌在处理中英文句法结构差异、具有地域特色的方言、习语等乡土语言和文化特定元素时，仍存在理性化、澄清、扩展、高贵化与通俗化、质的弱化、量的弱化、方言体系的破坏或外化、表达及习语的破坏等“变形倾向”，牺牲了原文的一些细微之处和乡土特色。

Abstract: Based on Berman’s theory of the “negative analysis,” this study examines the “deforming tendencies” present in Nicky Harman’s English translation of Jia Pingwa’s novel Backflow River. The study finds that Harman’s translation exhibits several deforming tendencies when dealing with differences in Chinese and English syntactic structures, regionally distinctive dialects, idioms, and other elements of local language and culture. These include rationalization, clarification, expansion, ennoblement and popularization, qualitative impoverishment, quantitative impoverishment, the destruction of vernacular networks or exoticization, and the destruction of expressions and idioms. As a result, some of the original work’s nuances and local flavor are compromised in the translation.
