Abstract: Objective: To explore the relationship between problematic mobile phone use, depression, self-esteem and personality traits. Methods: 604 college students were investigated with Mobile Phone Problem Use Scale, the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale, Self-esteem Scale and Eysenck Personality Questionnaire Short Scale for Chinese. Results: The results show that problematic mobile phone use was negatively correlated with self-esteem (r = −0.29, P < 0.01), positively correlated with depression (r = 0.38, P < 0.01), and self-esteem was negatively correlated with depression (r = −0.44, P < 0.01). Self-esteem is the mediating variable between problematic mobile phone use and depression, and the mediating effect is 0.10. The mediating effect of self-esteem was regulated by personality traits. The moderating effect of high neuroticism level on depression was statistically significant (β = −0.37, P < 0.001), and that of extraversion personality was statistically significant (low extraversion β = −0.48, P < 0.001; high extraversion β = −0.19, P < 0.001). Conclusion: Problematic mobile phone use affects depression through the mediating effect of self-esteem and the moderating effect of neuroticism and extraversion.
