A Comparative Study of Construal in English Translation of Culture-Loaded Words in Luoyang Qielan Ji

摘要: 本文以《洛阳伽蓝记·第一卷》文化负载词的英译为研究对象，对比分析王伊同与Jenner的译本。研究发现，两位译者识解方式不同，产生了不同的翻译风格。王伊同以异化策略为主导，通过直译、意译与注释等相结合的方法，实现与原文相似的细颗粒度描写，对原文文化负载词的聚焦对象作出调整，突显不同侧面，灵活调整句式结构和叙述视角。Jenner则以读者接受为导向，采用意译、音译加注与增译等方法，通过粗颗粒度描写降低读者认知负荷，突显文化负载词的多个侧面，显化其隐含语义，并克制对原文句式的调整以维持其叙事意图。
Abstract: This study conducts a comparative analysis of the English translations of culture-loaded words in Luoyang Qielan Ji (Volume I) by Yitong Wang and Jenner. The findings reveal that the divergent construal approaches adopted by the two translators engendered distinct translation styles. Yitong Wang predominantly adopts a foreignization-oriented strategy, integrating literal translation, free translation, and annotated explanations to achieve fine-grained representation that approximates the source text. He adjusts the focus of culture-loaded words, foregrounds different profiles, and dynamically modifies syntactic structures and narrative perspectives. In contrast, Jenner prioritizes reader accessibility, employing free translation, transliteration with annotations, and addition to constructing coarse-grained representations. This approach reduces the cognitive load on readers by highlighting multiple implicit profiles of culture-loaded words and explicating their connotative meanings while minimizing syntactic alterations to retain the original narrative intentionality.
