An Analysis of the Listening Section Reforms in the 2026 TOEFL iBT^®️ Test

摘要: 2026年托福iBT^®考试进行了重大改革，其听力部分引入了四种全新题型：“Listen and Choose a Response”、“Listen to a Conversation”、“Listen to an Announcement”及“Listen to an Academic Talk”。本次改革的核心在于题型设计的“微型化”、“高效化”与“语用化”，旨在更精准、更高效地衡量考生在学术与日常场景下的真实语言理解与应用能力。本文基于ETS官方指南及内部培训材料，首先系统梳理并对比了四种新题型的测试形式、话题场景、文本特征及核心考查要点。进而，本文从“交际能力”(Communicative Competence)的理论框架出发，深入剖析了各题型对考生语言能力、社会语言能力、策略能力及语篇理解能力的不同维度要求。最后，本文针对大学及高中托福教学者，提出了分级、分类的针对性教学策略与课堂实践建议，以应对此次改革带来的挑战，有效提升学生的应试能力与真实语言交际能力。

Abstract: The 2026 TOEFL iBT^®️ test has undergone a significant reform, introducing four new question types in the listening section: “Listen and Choose a Response”, “Listen to a Conversation”, “Listen to an Announcement”, and “Listen to an Academic Talk”. The core of this reform lies in the “miniaturization”, “efficiency”, and “pragmatic orientation” of the test design, aiming to assess test-takers’ authentic language comprehension and application abilities in academic and daily scenarios more precisely and efficiently. Based on ETS official guidelines and internal training materials, this paper first systematically reviews and compares the test format, topical scenarios, textual features, and core assessment points of these four new question types. Furthermore, from the theoretical framework of “Communicative Competence”, it delves into the varying demands each question type places on test-takers’ linguistic competence, sociolinguistic competence, strategic competence, and discourse competence. Finally, targeting TOEFL instructors in universities and high schools, the paper proposes tiered and categorized targeted teaching strategies and practical classroom activity suggestions to address the challenges posed by this reform and effectively enhance students’ test-taking skills and real-world communicative competence.
