Abstract: Objective: To preliminarily explore the effectiveness and mechanisms of interpersonally-oriented group psychotherapy for university student clients. Methods: Sixty student clients from a comprehensive university’s psychological counseling center, who had received interpersonally-oriented group psychotherapy (once weekly, ranging from a minimum of 12 sessions over one semester to a maximum of 72 sessions over six semesters), were assessed using the Therapeutic Factors Questionnaire. Post-group semi-structured interviews were conducted based on a group feedback form outline. Quantitative results were subsequently analyzed in conjunction with qualitative materials. Results: ① The effects of interpersonally-oriented group therapy for clients at the university counseling center manifested in: increased self-understanding and self-acceptance; improved self-emotion management skills; enhanced interpersonal skills; greater motivation for action; and increased sense of responsibility. ② The six therapeutic factors ranked as most important were, in order: existential awareness, emotional ventilation, self-understanding, interpersonal learning (input), interpersonal learning (output), and universality. ③ The ten items perceived as most helpful (ranked by importance) were: Other members telling me honestly what they think of me; Realizing that I must ultimately take responsibility for how I live my life, no matter how much guidance and support I get from others; Facing life and death, and consequently striving to live more honestly without getting bogged down in trivialities; The group showing me what impression I make on others; The group giving me the chance to learn how to interact with others; Understanding my way of interacting with other members; Knowing that others have problems similar to mine; Learning how to express my feelings; Admiring and imitating the therapist; Adopting mannerisms or styles of another group member. Conclusion: Interpersonally-oriented group psychotherapy can effectively help university student clients. The primary therapeutic factors involved are existential awareness, emotional ventilation, self-understanding, interpersonal learning (input), interpersonal learning (output), and universality.
