Abstract: Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a common disease of the digestive system. In recent years, the incidence of AP has been increasing year by year. Mild cases are usually self-limited and can heal without special intervention, but some patients can progress to severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) and even life-threatening. With the gradual increase in the proportion of obese people, the incidence of metabolic-related diseases has also increased. However, traditional obesity assessment indicators such as body mass index (BMI) are difficult to accurately reflect the specific distribution of body fat. Visceral adipose tissue can aggravate obesity-related chronic low-grade inflammation and participate in the occurrence and development of metabolic syndrome, acute pancreatitis, diabetes and other diseases. This article systematically explores the correlation between visceral fat area and the severity of acute pancreatitis and its risk of complications, and looks forward to its potential new targets in the treatment of pancreatitis.
