The Price of Freedom—On the Dialectical Relationship between Freedom and Responsibility in Fernando Savater’s The Invitation to Ethics

摘要: 费尔南多·萨瓦特尔在《伦理学的邀请》中将自由与责任的辩证关系置于伦理学的核心，主张自由不仅是形式上的选择权，更是对选择后果的承担能力。本文在系统梳理萨瓦特尔自由–责任观的基础上，引入批判性反思视角，指出该理论对个体选择能力的平等预设、社会结构性制约的忽视以及跨文化适用性等方面存在局限。进而探讨在资源分配不均、制度性不公、文化多元等现实语境下，个体责任与社会公正之间的张力，并尝试提出对萨瓦特尔理论的补充性思考。

Abstract: In The Invitation to Ethics, Fernando Savater places the dialectical relationship between freedom and responsibility at the core of ethics, arguing that freedom is not merely a formal right to choose, but also the capacity to bear the consequences of one’s choices. This paper systematically reviews Savater’s conception of freedom and responsibility, and introduces a critical perspective to identify the limitations of his theory, including its presupposition of equal capacity for choice among individuals, its neglect of social structural constraints, and its limited cross-cultural applicability. Furthermore, it explores the tension between individual responsibility and social justice in real-world contexts marked by unequal resource distribution, institutional injustice, and cultural pluralism, and attempts to propose supplementary reflections on Savater’s ethical framework.
