Identification and Interpretation of Metaphors in Boy in the Twilight: Stories of the Hidden China and an Analysis of Their English Translation
Boy in the Twilight:
Stories of the Hidden China。
Abstract: Yu Hua’s classic short story originally titled Huanghun li de Nanhai, was translated into English by the American sinologist Allan H. Barr as Boy in the Twilight: Stories of the Hidden China. Guided by metaphor theory, this study employs the Metaphor Identification Procedure Vrije Universiteit (MIPVU) to identify metaphorical expressions in the text. Drawing on Lakoff’s Conceptual Metaphor Theory, the identified metaphors are categorized into structural metaphors, ontological metaphors, and orientational (spatial) metaphors. The study then discusses major approaches to metaphor translation and conducts a detailed analysis based on Toury’s translation strategies for metaphor. Finally, it highlights the pedagogical and practical value of metaphor theory in literary translation, emphasizing its significance for translation teaching and practice. It is hoped that future research will provide further theoretical support and methodological guidance for the translation of metaphor.
