A Comparative Study of Evaluative Lexicon in English and Chinese Academic Journal Abstracts

摘要: 研究根据Martin评价理论从态度、介入、极差三个方面对中英学术期刊摘要中的评价性词汇进行对比研究。发现中英文学术期刊在态度系统都频繁使用判断鉴赏资源;在介入系统中文摘要以单声介入为主导,英文摘要以多声为主导;在极差系统中英文摘要都较多使用语势手段。在此基础上分析二者通过评价性词汇表达人际功能的具体差异,以及背后的语境文化原因。期望通过研究揭示两种语言在学术交流中的异同点,进一步提升学术写作的质量和规范性,促进学术交流的有效性和准确性。
Abstract: Based on Martin’s Appraisal Theory, this study conducts a comparative analysis of evaluative lexicon in Chinese and English academic journal abstracts from three dimensions: attitude, engagement, and graduation. The findings reveal that both Chinese and English academic journals frequently employ resources of judgment and appreciation within the attitude system. In the engagement system, Chinese abstracts predominantly adopt monoglossic engagement, while English abstracts favor heteroglossic engagement. In the graduation system, both types of abstracts frequently utilize force strategies. On this basis, the study analyzes the specific differences in how evaluative lexicon expresses interpersonal functions in the two languages, as well as the underlying contextual and cultural reasons. The research aims to uncover similarities and differences between the two languages in academic communication, with the goal of further enhancing the quality and standardization of academic writing and promoting the effectiveness and accuracy of scholarly exchanges.
