Symbol and Symbolism: An Analysis of Artistic Techniques in “The Story of the Lute”

摘要: 《琵琶记》是中国古典戏剧作品的杰出代表之一，同时也是世界戏剧史上的杰作。该作品通过叙写赵五娘的贤惠孝顺，蔡伯喈的全忠全孝，展现了中国古代对于社会男女的道德要求与标准，以及当时的精神风貌。《琵琶记》的最突出艺术特征，在于对符号、象征的运用，极大丰富了作品寓意、思想内涵。本文以《琵琶记》为研究对象，运用文本分析方法，探析其符号、象征的艺术表达。研究表明，作品中符号、象征的精妙运用，赋予文本更为深刻的价值、意蕴。

Abstract: “The Story of the Lute” is not only an outstanding representative of classical Chinese drama but also a masterpiece in the history of world theatre. By depicting the virtuous and filial piety of Zhao Wuniang and the unwavering loyalty and filial piety of Cai Bojie, the work reflects the moral requirements and standards for men and women in ancient Chinese society, as well as the spiritual outlook of that era. The most prominent artistic feature of “The Story of the Lute” lies in its use of symbols and symbolic imagery, which greatly enrich the implied meaning and ideological connotation of the work. Taking the play as the research object, this paper adopts the method of textual analysis to explore its artistic expression of signs and symbolism. The study shows that the exquisite application of symbols and symbolic devices in the work endows the text with deeper value and implication.
