A Review of Body Appreciation Research: Concepts, Measurement, Antecedents, Consequences, and Protective Mechanisms
Abstract: Body appreciation, as the core dimension of positive body image, has garnered increasing research attention in recent years. This review systematically examines the conceptualization, measurement, antecedents, consequences, and protective mechanisms of body appreciation. Defined as an individual’s attitude of love, respect, and acceptance toward their body, body appreciation encompasses positive evaluations of both appearance and functionality, distinguishing it from related constructs such as body satisfaction and body acceptance. In terms of measurement, the “Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2)” and the “Functionality Appreciation Scale (FAS)” have been widely validated across cultures. Grounded in the biopsychosocial model, body appreciation is influenced by multiple factors including self-compassion, others’ acceptance, media consumption, and physical activity, and significantly predicts psychological well-being, intuitive eating, and health behaviors. Crucially, body appreciation buffers against negative impacts of media-ideal internalization, social comparison, and self-objectification through a “protective filtering” mechanism. Future research should advance the refinement of the body appreciation construct, focusing on its developmental trajectories, developing targeted intervention strategies, and conducting culturally grounded studies.
