Analysis of Xu Yuanchong’s Translation of “The Romance of the Western Chamber”

摘要: 《西厢记》作为中国古典戏剧的代表作之一，其中记录了许许多多的中国文化，是一个中华文化的缩影。因此，本文将借助许渊冲先生的“意美”说，深入研究许渊冲译本中对于文化内涵的翻译和传达，并且通过对文化典故的翻译研究，总结对文化典故翻译的策略或技巧。最后，通过前面的深入研究，提出作为一名译者，在跨文化交际中，如何在忠实原文的基础上，使目标语言读者更加通俗易懂地理解原文本和了解中国古典作品中蕴含的丰富的文化和历史背景的建议。

Abstract: “The Romance of the Western Chamber,” as one of the representative works of Chinese classical drama, records numerous aspects of Chinese culture and serves as an epitome of Chinese culture. Therefore, this paper will draw on Mr. Xu Yuanchong’s theory of “beautiful meaning” to conduct an in-depth study on the translation and conveyance of cultural connotations in Xu Yuanchong’s translation version. Furthermore, through the study of the translation of cultural allusions, it will summarize strategies or techniques for translating cultural allusions. Finally, based on the previous in-depth research, suggestions will be provided on how, as a translator, to make the target language readers more easily understand the original text and comprehend the rich cultural and historical background contained in Chinese classical works while remaining faithful to the original text in cross-cultural communication.
