Food and Appetite Writing in The Blind Assassin
Abstract: This paper examines the construction of discourse in Canadian author and Literary critic Margaret Atwood’s Booker Prize-winning novel The Blind Assassin through an analysis of its depictions of food and appetite. In the novel, food and appetite function not merely as representations of material substance and desire, but also as sites where the dissolution and reconstruction of subjectivity are enacted. From Atwood’s perspective, the discursive system implied by the alimentary order itself constitutes a vast digestive apparatus that consumes living subjects. The types of food in the novel are deeply intertwined with the protagonist, indirectly reflecting the distorted discursive order underlying the narrative. The protagonist’s suppression and rejection of appetite in The Blind Assassin serve as a form of resistance by marginalized individuals, who, in their loss of subjectivity, oppose the established discursive order. Through extensive depictions of food, Atwood reveals the passive situation of marginalized individuals within gender dynamics, bodily discourses, and power structures, while also illustrating their attempts to resist the distorted discursive order through the regulation or pursuit of appetite.
