Resistance, Temptation, and Unease: Drums in Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness from the Perspective of “Object Narration”
Abstract: The thought of “turn to thing” in the 21st century has gradually drawn academic attention to the “object” in literary texts. This study takes Joseph Conrad’s novella Heart of Darkness as its primary text, examining the recurring drumbeats from the perspective of “object narration”. It thoroughly explores three narrative functions of the drum as a “cultural object”, “living entity”, and “ontological being”, along with their profound thematic implications. The research reveals that the drum in the novel serves not merely as background ambiance, but rather as an embodied and agentive presence that drives the narrative momentum. It manifests both the resistance of African Black culture against the Eurocentric civilizational order constructed by white colonizers and its seductive allure towards the colonizers’ inner desires. Simultaneously, the drum exposes the colonizers’ psychological unease when confronting colonial realities and moral degradation, thereby profoundly illuminating the complex relationship between humans and “objects”.
