Interactive Mechanisms between Social Exclusion and Anger
Abstract: Social exclusion functions as a pervasive stressor that thwarts the fundamental need for belonging and triggers aggressive anger, frequently precipitating a maladaptive “exclusion-anger-re-exclusion” cycle. Using the “unconventional hero” archetype (e.g., Nezha) as a cultural lens, this paper elucidates the emotional dynamics through which marginalization transforms into hostility. This transition is driven by cognitive appraisals of self-esteem threats and social pain. Neurobiologically, the process is characterized by amygdala hyperactivation and compromised prefrontal regulatory control, coupled with acute surges in cortisol and adrenaline. Furthermore, cultural frameworks—such as “face” culture in East Asian societies—and personality traits (e.g., neuroticism) significantly modulate the threshold of anger expression following exclusion. We conclude by evaluating the efficacy of cognitive reappraisal, social support systems, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in disrupting this pathological trajectory, providing targeted intervention pathways for mitigating exclusion-induced psychological crises.
