Research Progress on Plant-Derived Extracellular Vesicles and Their Applications in Cosmetics
Abstract: Plant-Derived Extracellular Vesicles (PDEVs) are nano-scale membrane vesicles with a canonical lipid bilayer structure, naturally secreted by plant cells. They can encapsulate and efficiently deliver a wide spectrum of bioactive components, including plant-specific small RNAs, functional proteins, and secondary metabolites. Endowed with inherent advantages such as wide availability, superior biocompatibility, and low immunogenicity, PDEVs have exhibited immense application potential in the field of skin care. Herein, we systematically review the mainstream isolation and purification technologies for PDEVs, such as differential ultracentrifugation and density gradient centrifugation. We predominantly summarize the skincare efficacy of PDEVs and their underlying molecular mechanisms in the aspects of wound healing promotion, anti-aging, skin whitening, and hair growth stimulation. Meanwhile, we analyze the pivotal challenges faced by PDEVs in terms of safety evaluation, storage stability, and transdermal delivery. This review aims to provide a theoretical reference for the development of PDEVs as functional cosmetic raw materials and for advancing subsequent relevant research.
