Abstract: The pathogenesis of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is complex and has not been fully elucidated. In recent years, studies have shown that epigenetics plays an important role in the pathophysiology of IBS, including DNA methylation, histone modification, non-coding RNA, and chromatin remodeling. Epigenetics may be applied to the diagnosis and treatment of IBS in the future. This article reviews the latest research advances in the role of epigenetics in the pathophysiology of IBS from five aspects: intestinal barrier function, intestinal inflammation and immunity, gut microbiota, gut-brain axis and visceral hypersensitivity, and neurotransmitter transmission.
