Abstract: Perioperative sleep disturbance is a common perioperative problem among surgical patients and may occur before surgery, during the early postoperative period, and throughout recovery. It is mainly characterized by difficulty falling asleep, shortened sleep duration, increased nocturnal awakenings, sleep fragmentation, and reduced sleep quality. These disturbances not only affect patients’ subjective comfort and recovery experience but may also be associated with adverse outcomes such as aggravated postoperative pain, postoperative delirium, and delayed rehabilitation. Current intervention strategies for perioperative sleep disturbances mainly include non-pharmacological and pharmacological approaches. This review summarizes the epidemiological characteristics, assessment methods, pathophysiological mechanisms, prognostic implications, and intervention strategies for sleep disturbances in perioperative patients, aiming to provide a reference for clinical perioperative sleep management.
