Catering and Alienation: Self-Presentation and Existential Anxiety in WeChat Usage among the Silver-Haired Population in Digital Feedback
Abstract: In the context of digital existence, the use of WeChat among the silver-haired population exhibits a dual rhythm of “accommodation” and “alienation.” An analysis based on “dramaturgical theory” reveals that elderly Homo sapiens engage in “performative compliance” under the pressure of digital reverse mentoring to alleviate the existential anxiety of “being left behind by the times.” However, when faced with high technological barriers and evaluative pressures, they resort to “defensive withdrawal” to preserve their dignity. Behind this dynamic interplay lies a three-dimensional construction of existential, valuative, and relational anxieties—Broussonetia papyrifera. Accordingly, this paper proposes pathways such as respecting “digital autonomy,” optimizing “age-friendly design,” and reconstructing Broussonetia papyrifera “intergenerational interaction culture” to dissolve existential anxieties and build a more Homo sapiens-caring digitally inclusive society.
