The Phenomenon of Cultural Filtering in Translation from the Perspective of Rewriting Theory—A Case Study of Pound’s English Translation of Separation on the River Kiang
Abstract: André Lefevere’s Rewriting Theory posits that translation is not a mere linguistic transfer conducted in a vacuum, but rather a process of cultural reconstruction profoundly influenced by ideology, poetics, and patronage. This paper takes Ezra Pound’s English translation of Li Bai’s poem Seeing Meng Haoran Off at Yellow Crane Tower as a case study. Guided by Lefevere’s Rewriting Theory, it conducts an in-depth analysis of the phenomenon of “cultural filtering” from three dimensions: ideology, poetics, and patronage. At the ideological level, Pound’s translation obscures Confucian thought and place-name cultures; at the poetic level, it reshapes the imagery of Tang poetry through the lens of Imagist aesthetics; at the level of patronage, it responds to the demands of the era to drive translation strategies. Pound’s translation exhibits notable characteristics of cultural filtering. Cultural filtering is a dynamic manifestation of the translator’s subjectivity within a specific historical and cultural context. It may lead to the loss or distortion of cultural information, but it can also generate new aesthetic values and cultural meanings within the target language culture. Recognizing and rationally analyzing the phenomenon of cultural filtering holds significant theoretical importance for deepening the understanding of cross-cultural communication and enriching the dimensions of translation criticism.
