系统功能语言学视角下英语本族语者课堂用语功能阐释与应用启示——以情景喜剧Mind Your Language为例
An Analysis of the Functions of Classroom Language Used by Native English Speakers from a Systemic Functional Linguistics Perspective: Implications for Application—Taking the Sitcom Mind Your Language as an Example
Abstract: Against the backdrop of globalization, English language teaching in China is flourishing. As the classroom serves as the primary arena for English instruction, the standardization and functionality of teachers’ classroom language significantly influence teaching quality. This study employs the three macro-functions of Systemic Functional Linguistics to categorize the classroom language of Mr. Brown, the teacher in the first season of the sitcom Mind Your Language, into “order maintenance, activity organization, interaction initiation, and evaluative feedback”, followed by qualitative and quantitative analysis. The findings reveal that: (1) The vocabulary of the teacher’s classroom language exhibits a clustered distribution, with politeness markers and classroom command words constituting the overwhelming majority, and displaying significant colloquial and formulaic characteristics; (2) Transitive processes align closely with the four major classroom segments, with material, relational and speech processes undertaking the functions of behavioural control, evaluative judgement and interactive communication respectively; (3) Interpersonal functions are based on “commands + statements”, with “questioning” as the core of interaction and “offering” as a polite supplement, thereby achieving a unity of order and equality; (4) Discourse cohesion relies on the dynamic coordination of reference, connection, ellipsis and substitution, serving the transmission of teaching information and the organisation of classroom activities. This study provides empirical support for the application of Systemic Functional Linguistics to the study of discourse in second-language classrooms, and offers a reference for the optimization of discourse by English teachers in China.
