The Influence of the Evidentiality
in the Introduction and Conclusion
on the Author Identity Construction
in English and Chinese
Academic Discourse
Abstract: As a linguistic resource that indicates the source of information and cognitive stance, evidentiality plays an important role in the construction of authorial identity in academic discourse. This study, based on a self-built corpus of 30,000 words of English and Chinese linguistics academic papers, employs the evidentiality classification framework by Liao and Weng (2022), combining quantitative and qualitative methods, to examine the impact of evidential resources on authorial identity in introductions and conclusions. The study finds that: (1) In introduction, English papers frequently use sensory and belief evidentials, constructing the identities of empirical observer and position declarer; Chinese papers often use reported evidential, presenting a literature reviewer identity. (2) In conclusion, English papers make extensive use of belief and sensory evidential, constructing the identity of confident theoretical contributor; the use of evidential in Chinese papers significantly decreases, with the authorial identity tending to withdraw. (3) English cultures encourage highlighting personal contributions in conclusions, while Chinese cultures prefer a modest and implicit conclusion style. This study reveals the deep connection between evidential choices and academic culture, providing references for English and Chinese academic writing instruction and cross-cultural publication.
