Application of Music Therapy in the Treatment of Alzheimer’s Disease: International Research Advances and Practical Implications
Abstract: With the accelerating global trend of population aging, Alzheimer’s disease has emerged as a severe neurodegenerative disorder posing significant threats to elderly health, imposing substantial burdens on both society and families. While pharmacological treatments can alleviate symptoms to some extent, their notable side effects and inability to reverse disease progression have led to widespread attention toward non-pharmacological interventions. Music therapy, as a safe and effective non-pharmacological approach, has garnered increasing evidence support for its application in Alzheimer’s management. This article systematically reviews international research advancements in music therapy, focusing on key studies’ design, sample sizes, intervention details, control groups, primary outcome measures, and bias risks. It conducts in-depth analyses across intervention types, mechanisms of action, implementation challenges, and optimization strategies, while developing a theoretical framework for future validation of music therapy protocols based on domestic and international clinical experience, alongside outlining potential future directions. Studies demonstrate that music therapy effectively improves cognitive function, emotional well-being, and social engagement in Alzheimer’s patients by activating neural networks, modulating neurotransmitters, and regulating inflammatory responses; combined interventions tailored to local contexts further enhance therapeutic efficacy. Future efforts should focus on refining standardized protocols through large-scale multicenter trials, integrating modern technologies, and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration to promote standardized and widespread adoption of music therapy in Alzheimer’s treatment.
