A Study of English Polysemous Preposition from the Perspective of Lexical Concept and Cognitive Model Theory (LCCM)—A Case Study of Prepositions “on”, “over”, “above”
Abstract: Prepositions possess rich polysemy, which makes their acquisition particularly complex and abstract. The phenomenon of prepositional polysemy has long been a focal point in linguistic research. Although prototype theory, image schema theory, and conceptual metaphor theory have been widely applied in the study of prepositions, in-depth analysis of polysemous prepositions remains limited. In 2006, Evans proposed the LCCM (Lexical Concept and Cognitive Model) theory, offering a new perspective for preposition research; however, the application of this theory to polysemous prepositions is still scarce. Therefore, this paper aims to introduce the LCCM theory to explore the phenomenon of polysemous prepositions in greater depth. Taking “on”, “over”, and “above” as examples, this study analyzes their lexical representations and lexical concept integration to investigate the relationships among components within their semantic networks and the underlying cognitive mechanisms. Through lexical representation analysis, the core meanings and their related linguistic forms can be identified, providing a foundation for understanding how these meanings evolve and interrelate. Lexical concept integration, in turn, reveals the cognitive processes behind multiple meanings, illustrating how speakers and listeners construct and interpret prepositional meanings in context.
