Abstract: From the perspective of systemic functional linguistics, projection is regarded as a logico-semantic relationship, and reporting verbs are one of the key linguistic means through which projection is realized in academic discourse. This study examines master’s and doctoral theses in the field of English linguistics, focusing on the evaluative use of reporting verbs in their literature review sections, with the aim of exploring the similarities and differences between the two and their underlying causes. The findings reveal that master’s theses tend to employ low-risk reporting verbs to establish a research foundation, whereas doctoral dissertations more frequently utilize reporting verbs to engage in critical academic discourse. These differences primarily stem from variations in the depth and innovation required of the research, as well as differences in the authors’ academic training and proficiency levels. This study helps students gain a deeper understanding of the pragmatic functions of reporting verbs, thereby enhancing their abilities in interpersonal negotiation and identity construction in academic writing; simultaneously, it offers valuable insights for the teaching of academic English writing.
