Montessori’s Sensitive Periods Theory and Its Value in Contemporary Early Childhood Education—An Interpretation Based on The Secret of Childhood
Abstract: The theory of sensitive periods is a crucial component of Montessori’s philosophy of early childhood education. A sensitive period in a child’s life is a special phase during which the child can quickly enhance cognitive abilities, like intellect, order, and sensation through external stimuli, fully unleashing their potential. The key tenets of Montessori’s sensitive period theory include focusing on the implementation of early childhood education, adhering to the natural developmental tendencies of children, conducting personalized teaching based on the characteristics of children, and fostering their abilities for autonomous learning and exploration and providing reasonable educational assistance to young children. The theory of sensitive periods holds significant value and meaning for contemporary childhood education. Educators should acknowledge the importance of sensitive period theory in educational practices, treat children in their developmental sensitive periods scientifically, appropriately use the concept of sensitive periods in managing educator-child relationships, and fully leverage the positive impact of sensitive period theory on kindergarten curriculum design.
