A Scoping Review of Global Social Support Assessment Tools for Breastfeeding

Abstract: Objective: To systematically review social support assessment tools for breastfeeding, summarizing and analyzing their characteristics, which can provide reference for selecting social support assessment instruments of breastfeeding. Methods: A systematic search was conducted across Chinese and English databases, including PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Embase, CINAHL, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang Database, and VIP Database, supplemented by manual searches of references from included studies. The search period extended from the inception to October 9, 2025. Two researchers independently performed literature screening and data extraction, with standardized reporting of the scoping review. Results: A total of 21 articles were included, involving 15 assessment tools. Among these, 15 articles focused on the development and validation of the tools, and 6 on their Chinese localization and application. The basic characteristics, evaluators and subjects, dimensions and items, reliability and validity, and localization status for breastfeeding were summarized. Conclusion: The social support assessment tools for breastfeeding have good reliability and validity; however, there is a lack of instruments specifically designed to evaluate support from postpartum mothers, mothers-in-law, and other family members, as well as professional support from healthcare providers. Further research should focus on other social support groups, such as parents, parents-in-law, and healthcare workers, and develop breastfeeding social support tools appropriate for China’s cultural context.
