基于COCA语料库的动词Extend的扩展意义单位研究

A Study on the Extended Unit of Meaning of the Verb “Extend” Based on the COCA Corpus

摘要: 语言学习不仅涉及词法与句法，更需深入探索语境中的整体意义。本研究基于COCA语料库，以动词“extend”为研究对象，通过分析其搭配词、类联接、语义倾向及语义韵，探究其扩展意义单位。研究发现，“extend”搭配广泛，涵盖身体部位(hand/arm/leg)、时间时限(period/deadline)、空间范围(range/mile)、经济财务(tax/benefit)等多领域名词，形成七大典型类联接模式(如EXTEND + NOUN、BE + EXTENDED + PREP + NOUN等)。其语义韵呈现多样性：既可客观描述动作或状态(中立语义韵)，也可关联支持行为或权利拓展传递积极情感，还可因搭配失业延续、不合理保护等语境体现消极倾向。本研究为英语学习者精准理解“extend”在不同语境中的语义特征与使用规则提供了实证依据，助力其在跨领域语境中实现词汇的恰当运用。

Abstract: Language learning involves not only morphology and syntax but also an in-depth exploration of holistic meaning in context. Based on the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA), this study takes the verb “extend” as its research object and investigates its extended unit of meaning by analyzing its collocates, colligations, semantic preferences, and semantic prosody. The findings show that “extend” collocates widely with nouns across multiple domains, such as body parts (hand/arm/leg), time duration (period/deadline), spatial extent (range/mile), and economics and finance (tax/benefit), forming seven typical colligational patterns (e.g., EXTEND + NOUN, BE + EXTENDED + PREP + NOUN). Its semantic prosody is diverse: it can objectively describe an action or state (neutral semantic prosody), convey positive emotion in association with supportive behavior or the expansion of rights, or take on negative connotations when used in contexts involving the extension of unemployment or unreasonable protection. This study provides empirical evidence to help English learners accurately grasp the semantic features and usage rules of “extend” in different contexts, thus enabling appropriate vocabulary use across various domains.
