Abstract: The title of a thesis serves as the “gateway” of academic writing, performing the dual function of condensing research content and attracting scholarly attention. This study takes the titles of master’s theses written by postgraduate students at a normal university in western China and the titles of international journal articles published during the same period as its research objects. It conducts a quantitative comparative analysis from two dimensions: syntactic structure and lexical use. The findings show that the thesis titles written by the postgraduate students at this university more frequently adopt noun phrase structures, displaying relatively concentrated syntactic patterns and a comparatively linear mode of information organization. By contrast, the titles of international journal articles show more diverse syntactic structures and frequently employ compound structures, with clearer information layering and stronger logical organization and rhetorical functions. At the lexical level, the thesis titles written by the postgraduate students show relatively lower lexical diversity and a lower proportion of low-frequency academic vocabulary, with some titles exhibiting semantic repetition and insufficient information density. In contrast, international journal titles tend to use more abstract and specialized academic vocabulary, thereby enhancing textual information density and academic professionalism. It should be noted that the title features of international journal articles should not be simply regarded as the only or absolute standard, since their use is also shaped by journal genre conventions, disciplinary traditions, and academic publication mechanisms. These differences may be related to the students’ lexical repertoire, academic writing training, thesis evaluation criteria, and first language transfer. Based on the findings, this study suggests strengthening the teaching of specialized academic vocabulary and cultivating students’ genre awareness of academic titles, so as to improve the accuracy, conciseness, and diversity of academic expression.
