Sound Symbolism in English and American Literature: A Case Study of Mark Twain’s Novels

摘要: 语音象征是指语言中某些语音与特定意义之间形成的象征性关联，通过语音的发音特征引发语义联想，体现语言符号的象似性。英美文学作为语音艺术的瑰宝，十分注重口语传统与语言实验，语音象征在诗歌、戏剧、小说等文本中得到了生动诠释。传统的语音象征研究多集中于概念阐述或诗歌音律美的传递效果，而忽略了在小说文字中传递的深层现实意蕴。本研究旨在跨越语音象征研究的传统文本分析藩篱，以“美国文学之父”马克·吐温的小说为代表，基于理论概念，剖析其如何通过灵活的写作策略，使语音本身成为人物塑造、社会批判和主题深化的核心载体。分析表明，马克·吐温借助人物特色语言，并巧妙利用声音与文字、口语与书面语之间的张力，不仅生动再现了美国地域文化风貌，更对当时的种族矛盾、社会规训与群体心态发起了深刻挑战，其语音象征艺术在美学与现实两个维度均取得了显著成效，奠定了其在美国文学现代化进程中的先驱地位。

Abstract: Sound symbolism refers to the symbolic association between certain speech sounds and specific meanings, whereby the phonetic features of sounds evoke semantic associations, reflecting the iconicity of linguistic signs. As a treasure of phonetic art, English and American literature places high value on oral tradition and linguistic experimentation, and sound symbolism has been vividly manifested in poetry, drama, fiction, and other genres. Traditional research on sound symbolism has largely focused on conceptual elucidation or the transmission of poetic musicality, while neglecting the deeper realistic implications conveyed in narrative prose. This study aims to transcend the confines of conventional textual analysis by taking Mark Twain, who is widely regarded as the “father of American literature”, as a representative case, and by examining how his flexible writing strategies enable sound itself to serve as a core vehicle for characterization, social critique, and thematic intensification. The analysis reveals that through the distinctive language of his characters and the skillful exploitation of tensions between sound and script, as well as between spoken and written language, Mark·Twain not only vividly reproduces the regional cultural landscape of America but also mounts a profound challenge to contemporary racial tensions, social discipline, and collective mentality. His art of sound symbolism proves remarkably effective on both aesthetic and realistic dimensions, consolidating his pioneering position in the modernization of American literature.
