A Study of “Ostensible Refusal” as a Speech Act on the Xiaohongshu Platform

摘要: 本研究从语用学视角出发，以言语行为理论和礼貌原则为理论框架，探讨中国社交平台小红书上普遍存在的“虚假拒绝”现象。“虚假拒绝”是一种特殊的间接言语行为，其表面形式为拒绝，但语用意图是期待对方坚持并最终接受。本研究通过收集小红书上涉及邀请、提供帮助、赠送礼物等场景下的对话语料，旨在分析“虚假拒绝”行为的常见语言实现形式；其在网络交际中所履行的特定语用功能；小红书平台的独有语境如何影响该行为的解读。

Abstract: This study, from a pragmatic perspective and grounded in Speech Act Theory and the Politeness Principle, investigates the prevalent phenomenon of “ostensible refusal” on the Chinese social platform Xiaohongshu. Ostensible refusal is a distinctive type of indirect speech act, wherein the surface form is a refusal, yet the pragmatic intention is to elicit the interlocutor’s insistence and eventual acceptance. By collecting conversational data from Xiaohongshu involving scenarios such as invitations, offers of assistance, and gift-giving, this study aims to analyze: (i) the common linguistic realizations of ostensible refusal; (ii) the specific pragmatic functions it performs in computer-mediated communication; (iii) how the unique context of the Xiaohongshu platform influences the interpretation of this speech act.
