From Trait to Process: Paradigm Evolution and Methodological Examination of Psychological Resilience Research
Abstract: Psychological resilience, as a core construct for understanding why individuals achieve positive adaptation in the face of adversity, has become a hotly debated interdisciplinary field spanning psychology, psychiatry, and neuroscience. However, conceptual ambiguity and diverse operationalization approaches have long constrained the accumulation and comparability of research findings. This review traces the paradigm shift from trait-oriented to process-oriented approaches in resilience research, systematically examining the hierarchical structure of protective factors, statistical models of underlying mechanisms, and evidence for intervention effectiveness. The findings reveal that resilience research is undergoing a profound transition from static description to dynamic explanation: the introduction of longitudinal designs has uncovered heterogeneity in intra-individual adaptation trajectories, neuroimaging advances have provided preliminary evidence for the biological underpinnings of resilience, and intervention studies have attempted to translate protective factors into actionable practical programs. Nevertheless, operationalization challenges, fragmentation of measurement instruments, insufficient ecological validity, and neglect of cultural contexts remain critical bottlenecks constraining disciplinary development. Future research should seek breakthroughs in methodological integration, cross-cultural comparison, dynamic systems modeling, and intervention precision.
