A Study on English Translation of Conceptual Metaphors of the Quasi-Affix “Xian”

摘要: 本文立足共时研究维度，以Lakoff & Johnson概念隐喻理论和Johnson意象图式理论为基础，选取2025~2026年的科技、生态、民生等类型的双语报道文章内容构建平行语料库，利用概念隐喻分析法、翻译文本对比法分析线隐喻案例，归纳“风景线、底线、红线、警戒线、主线”等后置类词缀“线”的隐喻表达特征，总结出适合不同意象特征的翻译策略。最终发现实体“线”可归纳出三类不同的空间意象特征，并大致映射三大抽象目标域。由于中西共享部分空间认知原型，同时存在少数认知差异，所以“线”隐喻英译文本以保留喻体的直译意象策略为主，转换同源域喻体为辅，较少使用去隐喻化策略。本研究尝试为完善汉语类词缀隐喻认知体系提供建议，为外宣文本隐喻翻译提供依据。

Abstract: This paper adopts a synchronic research perspective, grounded in Lakoff & Johnson’s Conceptual Metaphor Theory and Johnson’s Image Schema Theory. It constructs a parallel corpus from bilingual reports covering science and technology, ecology, people’s livelihood and other fields published from 2025 to 2026. Using conceptual metaphor analysis and translated text comparison, the paper analyzes metaphorical examples of the character “xian”, summarizes the metaphorical features of the postpositional quasi-affix “xian” in terms including scenic line, bottom line, red line, warning line and main line, and sorts out translation strategies adapted to different image features. The research concludes that the tangible concept of “xian” can be divided into three types of spatial image features, which correspond to three major abstract target domains through mapping. Chinese and Western cultures share some spatial cognitive prototypes yet bear minor cognitive distinctions. Therefore, English translations of “xian” metaphors primarily adopt literal translation that retains the vehicle, supplemented by vehicle replacement within the same source domain, with demetaphorization used less often. This study offers suggestions to enrich the cognitive research framework of metaphors involving Chinese quasi-affixes and provides references for metaphor translation in international publicity texts.
