Teaching Reform and Practice of the “RF Integrated Circuit Design” Course under the Research-Informed Teaching Model—Taking the Design of a GaAs Sub-GHz High-Precision Phase Shifter Chip as an Example
Abstract: As a core advanced course in microelectronics and integrated circuit engineering education, the traditional teaching of “RF Integrated Circuit Design” (RF IC Design) commonly faces pain points such as abstract theory, teaching cases disconnected from the industrial frontier, and a lack of high-frequency engineering intuition among students. This paper proposes a project-driven teaching reform path based on the “research-informed teaching” model. This approach adopts an industry-leading 6-bit Sub-GHz broadband digitally controlled phase shifter chip, based on a 0.15-µm GaAs process, as the overarching core teaching case. By translating scientific research innovations—such as the “inductor-reuse topology,” “equivalent bandpass network (EBP),” and “main-auxiliary inductor collaborative tuning”—into progressive practical training modules, the course guides students to deepen their understanding of underlying high-frequency logic through comprehensive simulation and multidimensional engineering trade-offs. Practice shows that this model effectively bridges the disconnect between theory and practice, significantly enhancing students’ comprehensive engineering practical abilities and academic innovative thinking.
