Paratextual Functions in English Translations of Shupu: A Diachronic Comparative Study

Abstract: This study takes Gérard Genette’s paratext theory as its theoretical basis and carries out diachronic and synchronic comparisons of four English translations of Shupu, translated by Sun Dayu (1997), Chang Ch’ung-ho & Hans H. Frankel (1995), Pietro De Laurentis (2011), and Kwan Sheng Vincent Poon & Kwok Kin Poon (2018). Through quantitative statistics of paratextual components across translations, including prefaces, and others, this study sorts out the evolutionary trajectory of paratextual functions. The research finds that the four translations differ markedly in paratextual volume and functional capacity, with Pan’s version containing nearly 40 times as many paratexts as Sun’s, the evolution of paratexts is driven by the accumulation of prior scholarship, the material conditions of publication, translators’ strategies, as well as their professional attainments in calligraphy. This study supplements existing Shu Pu translation research with a systematic examination of paratextual configurations. It provides practical insights for the paratextual design of classical Chinese calligraphic treatises in cross-cultural dissemination. A limitation persists, however: empirical research on reader reception remains absent.
