The Intervention Effect of Virtual Reality Technology on Pain during Pediatric Venipuncture: A Meta-Analysis
Abstract: Objective: To explore the intervention effect of virtual reality technology on pain during pediatric venipuncture. Methods: Seven Chinese and English databases, including PubMed, were searched to retrieve randomized controlled trials published up to July 2026 regarding virtual reality technology interventions for pediatric venipuncture pain. The literature was screened, data were extracted, and quality assessments were performed. Meta-analysis was performed with RevMan 5.4 and Stata 19. Results: 11 randomized controlled trials involving 1169 pediatric participants were included. The meta-analysis results demonstrated that virtual reality intervention could reduce venipuncture pain in children, with a statistically significant difference (SMD = −1.19; 95%CI: −1.87 to −0.51; P < 0.001). Conclusions: Available evidence demonstrates that VR technology can effectively alleviate pain associated with venipuncture in children and may serve as an adjunctive intervention for pain management during venipuncture in pediatric patients.
