The Relationship between Social Media Addiction Tendency and Emotion Regulation among College Students: A Cross-Sectional Study
Abstract: Objective: To examine the relationships between social media addiction tendency and two emotion regulation strategies, cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression, among college students. Methods: From September to October 2024, 986 college students were recruited from a university in Henan Province using convenience sampling. Data were collected through an online questionnaire incorporating the Social Media Addiction Scale and the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation analysis, and univariate linear regression analysis were performed to examine the relationships among the variables. Results: Social media addiction tendency was positively correlated with cognitive reappraisal (r = 0.138, P < 0.001) and expressive suppression (r = 0.383, P < 0.001). Cognitive reappraisal was also positively correlated with expressive suppression (r = 0.662, P < 0.001). Emotion regulation was positively correlated with social media addiction tendency (r = 0.890, P < 0.001). Univariate linear regression analysis showed that the model had an R2 of 0.793 and an adjusted R2 of 0.792. Conclusion: Individual differences in emotion regulation may be closely associated with social media use behaviors. Greater difficulty in effectively identifying, understanding, and regulating negative emotions may be associated with a higher level of social media addiction tendency.
