Abstract: Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) is a rare, life-threatening severe cutaneous adverse reaction involving mucocutaneous involvement. Carbamazepine is recognized as one of the most common causative agents. We report the case of 71-year-old male patient with trigeminal neuralgia who had been taking carbamazepine for more than one month. He subsequently presented with clinical features including systemic pleomorphic erythema, skin blisters, epidermal detachment and mucosal involvement. He was finally diagnosed with SJS induced by carbamazepine in an elderly patient positive for the HLA-B*1502 allele. Following immediate discontinuation of carbamazepine, the patient was treated with glucocorticoids combined with a tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) inhibitor and other supportive interventions. A literature review was also performed to improve the timely recognition and management of SJS and to guide the application of TNF-α inhibitors in its treatment.
